PRESS RELEASE OF THE HAITIAN CONGRESS TO FORTIFY HAITI AND FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE NATIONAL DAY and the WEEK OF THE DIASPORA IN HAITI FROM APRIL 14 TO APRIL 20, 2012, « THE URGENCY OF THE MOMENT »

The Haitian Congress supported the celebration of such an important event financially a year ago and participated in the festivities. Unfortunately, the Haitian Congress which had just concluded an Advocacy Summit in Washington DC and is unable to attend this year. However, the Haitian Congress applauds the celebration, joins in spirit and shares the following thoughts.

Last year, the Haitian Congress held press conferences and appeared in the local media throughout Haiti to discuss one principled demand which was and remains today the pressing issue of our time: AMENDING THE 1987 CONSTITUTION TO ALLOW DUAL NATIONALITY /MULTI CITIZENSHIP.

This is the URGENCY OF THE MOMENT. Nothing will have a more enduring impact on the positive economic development of Haiti and its prosperity than the full reintegration of the Haitian Diaspora, the sons and daughters of Haiti scattered throughout the world. We must be liberated from the constraints of the Constitution of 1987 so that we can exercise all of our rights as Haitian citizens and in order for Haiti to be able to take full advantage of its citizens regardless of the fact that they have adopted the citizenship of other nations.

We wish success to MHAVE which has organized the National Day of the Diaspora through activities during the entire week and reiterate our will to work together to advance the cause.
